Procrastinator’s Plan 9.2.10

The worst part about a long weekend is the anticipation in waiting for it to get here. It seems like a month ago that Paul was telling us we were on the cusp of the an extended holiday weekend and it’s only Thursday. I don’t know about you, but one thing that the Procrastinator doesn’t like to leave to the last minute is time off. I’ll take some more of that on the double. Surprisingly enough, I’ve actually got most of the weekend planned out in advance. It’s shocking, I know, but when you’ve been waiting 9 months for football season to start, you tend to solidify your plans for opening weekend well in advance.

Gatlin’s Barbecue: Food in the Family

I have a serious issue with desiring what we’ve been calling “the meat sweats”. You know, those feelings you get after eating a wonderful meal where a large amount of beef, chicken, pork, or lamb is involved. In Houston, a good burger or a trip to Phoenicia Deli usually satisfy my cravings, but on some days, I just need barbecue. Until a couple of weeks ago, there were only a few options for fulfilling my need for beef in barbecue form. I found another place to add to that list when I stepped into Gatlin’s Barbecue.

The Week That Was 8.29.10

Here we go, jumping off into a new week with a National Holiday looming like a unicorn on a hill framed by the sunset ready to take us to the promised land. Three-day weekends are great. The only thing better than them is the fact that football season begins next weekend. Oh, how I adore thee, college football.

Friday’s Four Cents: Is This Just Fan-tasy?

One of my favorite commercials these days shows a pair of prototypical jocks sitting around the lunch table in a high school cafeteria discussing Tim Lincecum’s WHIP when a group “losers” dogs them for being nerds. “It’s Not Crazy. It’s Sports.” is the tag line. While it might not be politically correct, it’s absolutely right on. Self-proclaimed manly men spend hours researching and analyzing statistical trends just to decide which players they should select for their fantasy team. These same guys crack on people for playing World of Warcraft. I tend to see that as hypocritical, so I prefer to make fun of both fantasy sports nerds and WoW geeks.

Photo of the Week: Sans-Appetite

Funny joke? Mishap? Or partial truth? I know I’ll get reamed for suggesting such things against Paul’s frequent gastro-mate, but it certainly presents a catalyst for thought if not a chuckle. Thanks, Red Rooster…

The Procrastinator’s Plan 8.26.10

Schools around Houston have started back up, which only serves to remind me of one thing. I’m not a kid anymore. While I tried to hold onto my youth as long as I could by staying in college for a decade, eventually all good things must come to an end. Oh well, I had a good run and, honestly, I don’t know if I’d have the stomach to do it all over again. Maybe in another life. Jerry probably said it best when he sang “what a long, strange trip it’s been,” but I like where I’ve ended up. Now if I could just figure out the pause button on this thing.
