El Real Tex-Mex Cafe: The Soft Opening

Growing up in the back of a Mexican food restaurant in The Alamo City, I fancy myself a connoisseur of Mexican food. So, naturally, I have had my sights set on El Real Tex-Mex Café since the day the restaurant was announced a few months ago. El Real is a collaboration between “Next Iron Chef” contestant and Reef chef, Bryan Caswell, and former Houston Press food critic, Robb Walsh, and Bill Floyd located in the old Tower Theater on Westheimer. I managed to weasel some reservations to the soft opening last night, and I will share my thoughts.

5 Simple Rules for the Best Super Bowl Party Ever

An estimated 12 billion people will be watching the Superbowl this year according to a statistic that I just made up.  It has become arguably the largest annual single event in the world, attracting football fans and non-football fans alike to witness the spectacle of the event. It is the pinnacle of American culture: Sports, pop-culture, marketing, capitalism and gluttony all converge for one glorious evening. I even have friends DVRing it specifically for the commercials (even though they will all be on Youtube by Monday morning).

Most of you will watch the Superbowl at some sort of Superbowl party, and some of you will host said party. Here are 5 simple guidelines to throwing the best Superbowl party around.

Walter’s on Washington: The Tontons “Final” Final Show

In 8 Words: Ghost, Moon, Bolt, Ladies, Rabies, Scabies, Babies, Finality

Listed on their facebook page as “Make or Break Show,” I ventured out to Walter’s on Washington Saturday to see one of my Houston favorites The Tontons play with Roky Moon and BOLT and Ghost Mountain. As pathetic as this sounds, I must admit I hadn’t seen a show at Walter’s in almost four years due to graduating college, and working out of town for a while, but I won’t bore you with one of those “the last time I was there” stories.
