I have a decent drive to work each day. I go the opposite direction of traffic and usually only deal with backups right in the downtown area. However, my commute involves I-10 East or “The Beast” as it is affectionately known. Like I-45, I-10 East has a nasty habit of flooding during moderate rain storms. While driving yesterday and experiencing high water I wondered why roadway flooding is such a problem in Houston and what the city actually does about it.

I have a serious issue with desiring what we’ve been calling “the meat sweats”. You know, those feelings you get after eating a wonderful meal where a large amount of beef, chicken, pork, or lamb is involved. In Houston, a good burger or a trip to Phoenicia Deli usually satisfy my cravings, but on some days, I just need barbecue. Until a couple of weeks ago, there were only a few options for fulfilling my need for beef in barbecue form. I found another place to add to that list when I stepped into Gatlin’s Barbecue.

A drive through random parts of this city usually results in me making remarks along the lines of “this area has so much potential”. It doesn’t really matter what part of Houston I’m in, if I see a bunch of abandoned warehouses or empty fields, my mind immediately goes to what it could be. Call me an optimist, call me crazy, call me whatever you want, when I see abandoned anything, I see potential.

The feeling of deja vu is coming over me. I think we’ve had this discussion once or maybe twice before. Burgers are a touchy subject, but we here at The Loop Scoop are trying to break through the bull (or is it heifer in this situation?) by checking out a bunch of Houston burger joints.

Continental’s entrance into the Star Alliance has lead to a significant increase in destinations available to travellers and starting on August 16, things will be even easier for those flyers wanting to use United out of George Bush Intercontinental. On August 16, United will be moving from Terminal A to Terminal C, gates 20 and 21. This is the north concourse, which has recently seen less traffic due to updates in the terminal and a slumping economy. With United moving to Terminal C flyers will no longer have to wait for a bus to take them to their connecting flight or reclear security.

With the colder than normal temperatures this past winter I had my hopes up that summer, or Mosquito Season as I like to call it, would not be as bad as usual. Well, it seems my hopes have been dashed and the little bloodthirsty buggers are out in full force.

It’s no secret that I love burgers. Growing up, my dad’s favorite meal was a burger and we had at least one night a week where our family enjoyed burgers for dinner. I have them in my DNA. With the news that In-N-Out is setting up shop in Dallas there have been a whole lot of people debating over which chain restaurant has a better burger, Whataburger or In-N-Out? Me, I’m on the fence, as I like both places, but I’ve taken a little time to write out a few things at each place that I am not a fan of.

Well, they’re no longer just sitting in a tree making eyes at each other, Continental Airlines and United Airlines are engaged to be wed in airline matrimony. Both airlines announced on Monday that they had agreed on a “merger of equals” with the new entity being United Airlines. I am not going to go into the merger details other than to say that United stockholders will own 55% of the new entity and Continental stockholders will own the remaining 45%. What I would like to discuss are a few predictions I have for the next few years.

In a small, restored bungalow on 11th Street, sits the newest eatery in the Heights. Zelko Bistro, the new endeavor from partners Jamie Zelko and Jeb Stuart, opened last week and has been busy ever since. I sat down with both Jamie and Jeb after eating dinner at their new restaurant to discuss the business, the vision, and community. What they had to say should be warming to the heart of anyone who loves the idea of true neighborhood and good food coming together.

The Heights is known for it’s bungalows and small town, main street-like feel. Recently however, it has become a foodie haven; from Stella Sola to Shade to Mam’s House of Ice. While these restaurants and snoball outposts are fantastic there are only a handful of diner-esque places to grab breakfast or brunch. Off the top of my head these are Lola, Yale Street Grill, and the “Creeks” (Dry Creek, Onion Creek, and Cedar Creek), but now there is Pie in the Sky Pie Company. After having both breakfast and pie here, I can say without a doubt that I am glad they’re in the neighborhood.
