I always assumed that Dolce Delights was the devil. It was a snap judgment, based on the fact that the sleek little pastry shop just had to go and open its doors within steps of the entrance to the gym. Do you have any idea how painful it is to force yourself past a sidewalk sign boasting “chocolate croissants,” to opt for an hour or two on the treadmill instead? Eventually, the temptation just became too much and I had to stop and take a peek. Just a peek. Eye candy never hurt anyone, right?

I recently stumbled out of Tacos a Go-Go, feeling like I would explode if I even visualized another quesadilla or Modelo. This was nothing new. Moderation and Mexican food just don’t mix. Not for me. I had indulged to that point of almost-misery and wanted nothing more than to hop the light rail home and curl up for a nice long nap. But the train had just pulled up at the Ensemble/HCC stop, and there was no way I was running down the block to catch it. Exertion isn’t good for the food baby.
So with time and calories to burn on that stretch of Main Street between Holman and Alabama, I shuffled up and down the sidewalk, wondering how long until the next train, how long until I could get to my well-deserved siesta. Then, something down the block caught my eye. Feeling slightly more awake, I headed for a sidewalk mannequin sporting a billowy Mexican style sundress. A wide window revealed silk-screened pillows featuring sequined mermaids and Vaqueros. When I peered inside and saw a shelf lined with fluorescent Day of the Dead paper-mache skulls, my fatigue was fully forgotten. I stepped through a pink front door and found myself inside Chick and Chica.

It feels a little obvious and unimaginative to write an article for The Loop Scoop about a store called Loop. Ironic even, considering I often refer to our ever-growing online mag as said moniker. Yet, ironic and predictable as it might seem, I ventured into the neighborhood store believing it fated only to be met with further irony – a bevy of shoes in so many of the brands I love. Where had I been the last year and a half since this little Village treasure opened? Did I not live but a mile away? Wasted time. . . especially since I could have been walking back and forth from Loop in style with a little help from shoes by Toms, Dolce Vita, Sam Edelman, Bernardos, Havianas, Seychelles, Jeffrey Campbell and Nicole.

It’s not often that I stray away from my go-to coffee shop for a latte or cappuccino, so I was jumping out of my comfort zone when I did so this past weekend. While doing a quick browse of my Twitter feed, I saw the name of a new coffee shop in Montrose mentioned a couple of times and decided to check it out for myself. All I knew was the name, Bungalow, and that they were new to Twitter.

As a seasoned shopper, I like to pride myself on the fact that I can take a passing glance at any store front, or even take a quick peek in the door, and within three seconds determine if it is worth my coming inside. With Muse, however, I merely had to park six feet from the door to know that I should definitely come in and I should definitely leave my credit cards in the glove compartment of my car. With its signature lamp-shade-head mannequins donning the latest fashion trends in the front windows, Muse is a store begging to be walked into for browsing AND buying. It’s the kind of store in which a gal could do A LOT of damage.

Sunday is Valentine’s day and the people of the world are scrambling. “What to do? How can I impress? Will I seem over-eager?” are just some of the questions that are being posed as I write this. “Là, tout n’est qu’ordre et beauté, Luxe, calme et volupté”
- Charles Baudelaire, nineteenth century French poet
“There, all is just order and beauty, luxury, peace, and sensual delight.”
There are some retail boutiques that are so inviting; so fetching and intoxicatingly beautiful that husbands everywhere absolutely shudder to know that their wives are even aware of the shop’s existence. Like a Siren’s song these rare boutiques carry a consumer appeal that is so enticing, purchasing is nearly impossible to resist, and I should know. Nestled in the heart of Rice Village is one such place; a place where romantic glamour and elegance meets relaxed comfort and impeccable style; a place where anyone who has ever savored the essence of French living can bring a touch of Provence into their own home.

I don’t know if it is just me – or maybe other lady Loopsters have this problem too: Finding accessories. I always see other gals with the cutest necklaces or bangles or scarves or rings, but when I attempt to shop for these things, I come up empty handed. Maybe it’s the grass-is-greener effect, and everything just looks cute because someone else has it – but whatever the reason, I’ve found a solution: Silver Smith Boutique.
