With Entrepreneur Camp Houston slated for this coming Saturday, we figured it would be a good time to sit down with one of the organizers, Brian Truax, and get an idea of what to expect. Thankfully, he took the time to answer our questions. All of you aspiring Startups out there won’t want to miss the interview or, more importantly, the camp.

Dinner be damned. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for the party. The show must go on. And when the show is actually scheduled to hit the stage a half hour after an ever-important kickball team summit, you have to substitute the Reuben you wanted with three or five more Brewhouse Brown Ales. Let’s call it “method-fanning.” Living the life of a rockstar for one night in the name of being able to connect with the aspiring rockstars commanding the stage of Rudyard’s on a Friday night.

Hanging out at a bar on a Sunday at 3PM isn’t my usual modus operandi, but when I found out that the Washington Avenue Drinkery was hosting a six week sand volleyball tournament in their parking lot, that all changed. Sand, sun and beer is a winning combination in my book and I’m always looking for ways to get some exercise that don’t involve a treadmill at the gym.

We wrote about it a bit yesterday, but we couldn’t walk away from the Saint Arnold Brewery’s softball tournament without a photo essay. Plus, there is glory to be had in our run to the championship game. Why wouldn’t we want to brag about that a little more. Our ragtag team fought through two whole games to get a chance to stand as the winner of the first ever Chicago-style softball tournament. Here’s our story through photographs and words (but mostly photographs).

I actually got a visit from the Man Police this week. Apparently, I had violated the terms of my probation by going to an outlet mall and buying pots and pans, so I was forced to give up my man card. For those ladies out there who don’t know, the man card is an official document that proves your manliness, because sometimes a penis just isn’t enough. And when I say official, I mean it. They even have a website. Basically, the man card allows you entrance into those really great places that men love to go, like dive bars, high end steak houses and low end strip clubs. It’s extremely important.
I tried to argue with the Man Police that the pans that I purchased were really cool, top of the line cookware and that I’d already used them to cook such manly dishes as braised short ribs and salt crusted beef tenderloin, but they weren’t having it. This means that this weekend I’ll be forced to go balls to the wall in hopes of being reinstated. I’m hoping that after a weekend of drinking beer, eating burgers, playing softball and grilling out, there will be no questioning my masculinity and I’ll once again be able to walk, with my knuckles dragging the ground, but my head held high. Wish me luck.

The Warehouse Live crowd for The Psychedelic Furs was easy to anticipate. Their hit “Pretty in Pink” inspired John Hughes’ 80’s classic and has created generations of fans of the band. From teen to 50-somethings, all were represented. This past Friday, some thinking them one-hit wonders heard the rest of The Psychedelic Furs’ catalog that has earned them critical success and influenced many.

With the colder than normal temperatures this past winter I had my hopes up that summer, or Mosquito Season as I like to call it, would not be as bad as usual. Well, it seems my hopes have been dashed and the little bloodthirsty buggers are out in full force.

Whether you were born in the USA or not, every body loves a birthday party. While it might not be so easy to find a cake big enough to sport the requisite 234 candles, it’s our patriotic duty to go out and celebrate the birth of our nation. While some people get tomorrow off and others don’t have to report to work on Monday, the truly blessed are taking both Friday and Monday off for a much needed four day weekend. That leaves more than enough time to get out and sample some of the new places that have recently opened up and get some face time at some of our old favorites. Whatever your schedule looks like, if you need some help planning, we’ve got you covered with Fireworks, BBQ and road trips. Does it get any more American than that? This weekend, have fun, get drunk, no trouble.

Usually when I’m writing for The Loop Scoop, I’m pouring knowledge about great beers or beer events, but today I wanted to explore an amazing new development in my other passion. Aside from beer and homebrewing, my other major “hobby” (it’s more of a way of life than a hobby, really) is triathlons. In a future article, I’ll go into depth about the Houston triathlon scene and whatnot, but for this article, I wanted to mention some pretty big news with the announcement of Ironman Texas right here in Houston!

We missed the Lone Star Beer Landowner’s Challenge on Thursday, June 24th. More than that, we missed out on competing in the event. I have been drinking Lone Star since college. This must have at least funded the plot of land that Guadalupe Valenzuela won during the competition. I want my piece of the pie Lupe. Be forewarned. Below is the press release and rundown from the event.
