Chili Cook-offs are in the air. It’s Fall. Or Summeronumero Dos. We were teased with a brief cold snap, but now we’re back to gasping in a balmy eighty-something degree stupor, like a dying fish on a riverbank. What could lure any rational Houstonian to indulge in not one, but nine bowls of piping hot chili? The reasons are obvious, my friend. Donations to benefit Child Advocates, Inc., Saint Arnold’s new Santo brew, and Sammy’s Wild Game Grill, Felix 55, Community Bar, Eatsie Boys, Haven, Beaver’s, Quattro, Shade, and Zelko Bistro, all moving beyond their signature styles to prepare the perfect pot o’ the hot stuff—that is impetus enough to brave a fall tradition in not-so-fall weather.

Ah the Greek Festival, it comes but once a year. You’d think with so much Greek around Houston, the festival dedicated to this ancient culture, on its 45th incarnation in Houston no less, might lose its luster. Not so. The lack of parking alone disproves that notion.

We had come up with this category called Pride and Pestilence a while back hoping to chronicle Loopster journeys out of the city. That didn’t really pan out the way we thought it would, but it’s nice to have a fallback plan for things that don’t fit in our usual wheel house. This year, Austin City Limits didn’t really fit in my wheelhouse… And by that, I mean that I think I’m getting old.

Recently we got the opportunity to interview Soham Mehta, filmmaker and participant in this year’s SLANT Film Festival. By “recently” we mean “about an hour ago.” He gave us his thoughts on the Houston arts community, film-making and the festival scene.
Soham got involved with SLANT Film Festival four years ago and this will be his third film to screen. “I’m from Houston and I was looking for opportunities to screen my films here. I wanted to support the Houston arts scene and I think what Melissa Hung has been able to do with the festival,” he told me.

For me, the Houston PRIDE Parade has less to do with the celebration of homosexuality, and more to do with the right to love whomever the hell you please, without the government sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong. On a day where major inroads for gay rights were paved in New York, Houston did its part to spread the message. I won’t get on a soapbox about civil rights here, as I realize that hyperbole, hot pants and rainbow wigs aren’t always appropriate attire for storming Capitol Hill. So I’ll just stick to the PRIDE Parade facts, namely, that this is one of the best events in Houston, and dare I say it, the whole damned country.
