Loopster Live: The Happen-Ins at Rudyard’s

Dinner be damned. Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices for the party. The show must go on. And when the show is actually scheduled to hit the stage a half hour after an ever-important kickball team summit, you have to substitute the Reuben you wanted with three or five more Brewhouse Brown Ales. Let’s call it “method-fanning.” Living the life of a rockstar for one night in the name of being able to connect with the aspiring rockstars commanding the stage of Rudyard’s on a Friday night.

Three albums/EP’s and five years later, Keane returned to Houston Sunday night. Their performance at Warehouse Live might have been overshadowed by Gaga hype, but the band showed why they command a huge following in Britain.

The Procrastinator’s Plan 7.8.10

Reply
Edit

I actually got a visit from the Man Police this week. Apparently, I had violated the terms of my probation by going to an outlet mall and buying pots and pans, so I was forced to give up my man card. For those ladies out there who don’t know, the man card is an official document that proves your manliness, because sometimes a penis just isn’t enough. And when I say official, I mean it. They even have a website. Basically, the man card allows you entrance into those really great places that men love to go, like dive bars, high end steak houses and low end strip clubs. It’s extremely important.

I tried to argue with the Man Police that the pans that I purchased were really cool, top of the line cookware and that I’d already used them to cook such manly dishes as braised short ribs and salt crusted beef tenderloin, but they weren’t having it. This means that this weekend I’ll be forced to go balls to the wall in hopes of being reinstated. I’m hoping that after a weekend of drinking beer, eating burgers, playing softball and grilling out, there will be no questioning my masculinity and I’ll once again be able to walk, with my knuckles dragging the ground, but my head held high. Wish me luck.

Loopster Live: The Psychedelic Furs at Warehouse Live

The Warehouse Live crowd for The Psychedelic Furs was easy to anticipate. Their hit “Pretty in Pink” inspired John Hughes’ 80’s classic and has created generations of fans of the band. From teen to 50-somethings, all were represented. This past Friday, some thinking them one-hit wonders heard the rest of The Psychedelic Furs’ catalog that has earned them critical success and influenced many.

Free Press Summer Fest 2010: Something to Call Our Own

Houston has a big hole to dig ourselves out of, but at least we now have a shovel. The biggest complaints about the city always seem to include our nightlife and the music scene. Though, I contest both points, Free Press Summer Fest is exactly the kind of thing that is needed to change perceptions. Big, eccentric venue plus big, eccentric bands equals a big, city-wide impact on even the most casual of Houston’s fans. With The Flaming Lips headlining the final day of Free Press Summer Fest this year, it’s not obvious which band qualification won out: Are they bigger or eccentric-er and can they bring in the ears and eyes to give some of Houston’s own scene some more exposure?

Light on the Stage: A Cory Morrow Preview

The first time I took friends of mine to see Cory Morrow play, they asked what kind of music he played. For want of a better term, I said country and they immediately let out a groan. Being good friends, (or not having anything else to do) they went along with me anyway, certain that they were going to hate the concert.

House of Blues: Party With the People

In 6 Words: Live, General, Wailers, Exclusive, Pavilions, Foundation

With a palpable hankering to see a live show, I stumbled upon a pair of free tickets to see The Wailers at the House of Blues on a Saturday night in January. Being a fan of both Reggae and the HOB venue, I opted to check out Bob Marley’s band over locals The Ton Tons, who were playing at Walter’s on Washington. Tough decision (those kids are really good), but I was not disappointed, as my gratis tickets granted admission into the exclusive, members-only Foundation Room, which I’ve been hearing about through various people.

Slaid Cleaves (pt. 2) – Look Back At Me: An Interview

As we mentioned on Wednesday, Slaid Cleaves was gracious enough to answer some questions that we posed earlier this week. The Austin-based singer/songwriter discussed life, his craft, and his new CD – Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away. He also talked about some of his favorite places to play in Houston. He’ll be performing live at the Mucky Duck tonight, with shows at 7:00 and 9:30. For a chance to win a pass to the Cougar Cookers Cook-Off tent, leave a comment with your favorite Cleaves song and why. We’ll pick the best answer and email the winner.

Slaid Cleaves (pt. 1) – Chasing Grace: A Preview to a Show

The indie music scene is one that tends to be glorified, but we forget how tough independent singer/songwriters have it. If you need confirmation of this, the stories on Slaid Cleaves’ website will happily oblige you with tales of such hardships. Endless miles in barely running cars, hopping from venue to venue, bad food and crappy hotels, all in search of the perfect gig. Luckily, Slaid won’t have far to drive this Friday when he commutes from Austin for two shows at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck.
