H-Town Showdown: #3 Dolce Vita vs. #6 Himalaya
Welcome to our H-Town Showdown series. Our brackets are seeded and the contenders for the title are ready to go. On a bi-weekly basis we’ll present a new match-up. There will be four weeks of voting for each competition in each round. So rally up your friends, followers and fans. This will be a true test of attrition.
Only three first round match-ups remain (including the below). We’ve come so far, yet it feels like we’re just getting started. For our two contenders this week, this is truly the beginning. In one corner we have pizza darlings Dolce Vita, in the other, Sharpstown stand-out Himalaya. Who to pick?
Seed #3: Dolce Vita
Is Houston the culinary mecca for pizza? No, but Dolce Vita is actually serving some damn good pies that have nothing to be embarrassed about… Eh, Papa John? With a thin crust that actually has flavor, well seasoned sauce and a variety of fresh seasonal toppings, it really makes you wonder where these bastardized versions of pizza came from. As I’m a minimalist, my pie of choice is the margharita. I don’t mess with the perfection of simplicity.
Seed #6: Himalaya
Seemingly another ubiquitous storefront restaurant in an unassuming shopping strip at 59 and Hillcroft, Himalaya is one of those places you can go and later brag about. Sure, it’s nothing flashy, but you’re in the know: the garlic naan, the steak tikka, the perfect chai tea, and the “best lentil curry in Houston.” Chef/owner Kaiser Lashkari keeps his restaurant’s atmosphere simple so the focus is on the enormous portions and flavors of his food. Himalaya churns out some of the most consistently delicious Indian food in the city, with a healthy side of excellent service. It’s a place you’ll inevitably return to again and again in a quest to leave no curried dish untried.
