Photo of the Week: Downtown and Lofts

Cybertoad returns to the Photo of the Week with this warm image set in Downtown Houston. For those curious, yes, those are the Rice Lofts in the background.

For those even further interested, the Rice Lofts were at one time a hotel—Rice Hotel. Built in 1913, it was considered one of the most luxurious hotels of its time. The Rice Hotel Cafeteria was the first air conditioned public room in Houston, back in 1922. That’s something. It remained a hotel until 1977.

I was in a wedding at the Rice Hotel a few years ago. Many of the older guests raved about the many fancy parties they attended in the ballroom. Apparently it was the classiest of places back then and a common hangout for Houston socialites.
