Staff Notes and Photos: SxSWhat?

You don’t know how many times I’ve been asked if I’m going to SXSW this year. Neither do I. I forgot to count. Why am I supposed to feel bad about not going. Honestly, the action is here (without the aggravation and hassle). I don’t need to rub elbows with the likes of Gizmodo or Techcrunch or Stereogum whatever other website that dwarfs our readership. Plus, Houston’s bringing it’s own buzz to Austin.

Even the New York Times is giving props to the local bands trying to make good at the now national conference/expo/clusterf*ck. Grandfather Child, The Tontons and The Nice Guys all made got their names in the paper as “local bands to watch” this week. And while that’s nice and everything, NYTimes and the rest need to realize we get to see them pretty much whenever we want.

Case and point, check out these photos by Jay Dryden taken of Grandfather Child at their “secret show” at Fitz before embarking to Austin. Makes you want to keep your ear to the ground to catch them next time, doesn’t it.

Of course, we look forward to hearing great things as our local favorites make their mark at SXSW, but it’s always comforting to know that they’ll be calling Houston and its fans home.

Check out Jay Dryden’s entire Grandfather Child set on Flickr.
