The Look Ahead: Low Anthem at Fitz, Something Borrowed Screening and Paulaner at Feast

Before we start coming down on poor Monday, let’s put this day into context. Osama Bin Laden is presumably dead, nuttiness over the Royal Wedding continues, the prelude of dinners to Texas Beer Fest has begun, it’s Tuesday in Japan, and we’re all at work, earning our keep. Does this all have any effect on our first day back on the job? Yes and no. On to things a wee bit closer to home.

Misconceptions and First Impressions: Calvin Goes to Houston

As an outsider, I had a pretty stereotypical view of Houston in general. Crowded, overweight and smoggy with a Gordian knot of highways and people wanting to mug you on every street corner. After spending the weekend there with The Loop Scoop crew, I can say that my perceptions have been pleasantly skewed. I found a place that had a myriad of interesting people to see and talk to, mind blowing places to eat, clever street art and a variety of places to practice my favored hobby of imbibing. I won’t bore you with a blow-by-blow of everything I did that weekend (due to the fact that some bits are hazy, and that The Loop Scoop has probably already covered the reviewing bits), but I will give you the impressions and anecdotes of a guy from a small college town in the bright lights of the big city.

The Procrastinator’s Plan 2.19.10

The weekend is here once again… And, Once again, you don’t have plans. That’s ok, it happens to the best of us. In fact, we haven’t quite made up our minds. Sure, I will be headed to the Slaid Cleaves show tonight, but what will the rest of our staff do? Only you can decide. In fact, you should view The Procrastinator’s Plan as a sort of “Choose Their Adventure.” You have the power to send Aaron to some place other than Petrol Station. Stephan will listen to your requests to take a photo safari in the warehouse district. I even think that Paul would honor your suggestion of dressing up in a chicken suit and cruising Market Square on Sunday afternoon… Not that he’s into that sort of thing. Of course you could always help out Danielle, Nikki, Richard, Emily, and Afrodet. Your wish is their command (maybe).

Feast: An Offal, Satisfying Experience

In 9 Words: Offal, Pig, Rabbit, Puckish, Heaping, Pimm’s, Feast, Rustic, Brains

Feast is a welcome addition to the Houston foodie culture. Just over a year old, they almost met their match with Hurricane Ike last fall and struggled to keep the restaurant afloat. To our collective benefit, not only did they survive the setback, but it is quickly becoming the current crown jewel of Houston’s thriving culinary community, splashing the pages of the New York Times and Bon Apetit. Hit their website to see the impressive list of reviews. (Fair warning, stretch your scrolling finger first, not responsible for the carpel tunnel causing single page web design)
