Sugarcane: When Life Gives You Lemons…

In 5 Words: Local, Organic, Refreshing, Cocktails, Rebirth

If you’re like me, when you hear of a new bar concept being opened on Washington Avenue you usually let out a little sigh and resign yourself to trying it at least once or twice. Love it or hate it, Houston’s first paved street is the centerpiece to our nightlife these days. Thankfully, when Sugarcane was announced, I didn’t so much groan with discontent as my ears perked, eager as I was to check out a few new drinks as the cocktail craze continues to build in Houston.

Liberty Station: Red, White and Cool

Like Washington Crossing the Delaware, Liberty Station is bringing life, liberty and the pursuit of a douchebag-free environment to Washington Ave, one craft beer at a time. Opening less than a month ago, Liberty Station is a haven for people looking to meet up with friends while sipping on quality cocktails or craft brews without all the pomp and circumstance of it’s not so distant neighbors. The challenge to you, Houston, is: ask not what they can do for you, but instead, ask how you can help them perpetuate their cool laid back environs.

H-Town Showdown: Bourbon St. vs. Washington Ave.

After a weekend trip to New Orleans I got to thinking, “how do some of the frequented tourist attractions around the country match up to Houston.” Sure, this isn’t a fair question in a lot of regards based solely on the lore. But when it comes down to it, we have a lot of comparable areas in town to those that grace the lips of bachelor party partiers all over the country. So, to that I offer you Bourbon Street and Washington Avenue and ask the question “who ya got?”

Benjy’s Brunch: Don’t Hold the Crab, Please

In 6 Words: Piquillo, Crabby, Avocado, Mimosas, Blood-Orange, Reservations

With the Benjy’s on Washington Avenue finally relenting to the popular cry for brunch, who am I to pass up an invitation to sample their midday treats? Since the venue is less than five minutes from my house, I would have to be an imbecile to forgo such a quick and easy fix for Sunday fare.

Walter’s on Washington: The Tontons “Final” Final Show

In 8 Words: Ghost, Moon, Bolt, Ladies, Rabies, Scabies, Babies, Finality

Listed on their facebook page as “Make or Break Show,” I ventured out to Walter’s on Washington Saturday to see one of my Houston favorites The Tontons play with Roky Moon and BOLT and Ghost Mountain. As pathetic as this sounds, I must admit I hadn’t seen a show at Walter’s in almost four years due to graduating college, and working out of town for a while, but I won’t bore you with one of those “the last time I was there” stories.

Sawyer Park: Beer Chandeliers and Turf Tables

In 6 Words: Chandeliers, Garlic, Chimichuri, Open-Air, Benched, Beer

Very few things get me motivated to leave my bed before noon on the weekend like the promise of football. Not that I would be willing to play football during my free time, but I gladly sit in front of the television for several hours watching and pretending that I could do as good a job (if not better) running, juking, catching and throwing on the gridiron. On any given Saturday or Sunday, I’m a master tactician, coach, motivator and clock manager, whether I’m in my overstuffed armchair at home or sitting at the bar with my buddies.

Branch Water Tavern: A First Impression

In 7 Words: Confit, Ragout, Whiskey, Gargantuan, Gnocchi, Versatile, Artisnal

Excited to try the new Branch Water Tavern, I sit across the street waiting for Durham traffic to clear. The parking lot is bare; the only exception is a blue E-Z up tent that houses the valet, which allays my concern of having to circle the block to find parking. As I take in the horizontal, unpainted boards against the grayish brown exterior that mark the reformed Cue and Cushion building, I can’t help but feel that the exterior décor hints at something that slightly misses the mark. I can’t put my finger on it, but there is either an abundance or lack of the wood detailing on the outside of the building that affects the finish, but I’m heading here to eat, not do an architecture tour of Washington Avenue.

The Usual Pub: Just As It Seems, Maybe

In 6 Words: Happy, Ending, 86, Concealed, Beer, Genial

It’s drinking as usual at the neighborhood dive bar. Situated off the beaten path of the oft too trendy Washington Avenue scene, The Usual serves as a welcome respite from the hipsters and trendsters commonly found just a few blocks away. It’s a place to grab a beer, catch up with some old friends and make some new ones. The dark, nondescript building hides on the corner of T.C. Jester and Allen, which makes sense when you consider that it was originally an Asian Massage parlor. Because of the location, it’s probably not the place where everyone knows your name, but stick around long enough and they will.
