DiverseWorks ArtSpace seeks Texas-based artists to collaborate with DiverseWorks to create a temporary public exhibition that takes as its inspiration the construct of a contemporary art fair and merges it with the age-old tradition of street peddling. Artists are invited to propose projects that explore the notion of street commerce, underground exchange and alternate economies that defy the strictures of the commercial art economy reinforced by the global art fair phenomenon. Hawk your wares! Peddle your services and skills! Trade and barter to your heart’s content! Carry your self-made business on your back!

Vacancies is an exhibit of public poetry installations in the First Ward by Matt Gundlach. Sacrament of the Ordinary is a lifetime stumbled upon in one year by Kate Ambrose. Using image and text, the artists explore Houston’s First Ward community, sharing an often unheard story of neighbor and neighborhood.

Gundlach and Ambrose, from California and Pennsylvania respectively, spent a year living and serving in Houston’s First Ward neighborhood through the Mission Year program. They spent 30 hours a week volunteering at a variety of neighborhood organizations. This exhibit is the result of their observations of the tension in “a community lost and in transition.”
