The Look Ahead: Daniel Johnston, Tchaikovsky and No Label Brews

We’re dissolving two of our favorite columns, Your Regular Scoop of Houston and Procrastinator’s Plan, and giving them a new look this year. Gone is the single serving of events in Houston. Here is a five-times-a-week battery of things to do. We will publish a few events every morning. If we’ve missed something let us know with an email to contact@theloopscoop.com or tweet at us @TheLoopScoop.

Tchaikovsky Traveling at Russian Cultural Center

Scoop’d from: OurTX.org

Three performers (Elizabeth Cai on violin, Catherine Cai on viola and Stephen Fierros on piano) will take to the stage to perform six Tchaikovsky compositions on Friday night at the Russian Cultural Center. Champagne will be served (or as they say on the website “Shampagne”). It’s sure to be a classy time. Brush up on your Violin Concerto.

No Label Brewing Co. Sampling Event at Rockwell Tavern

Where: Cypress [12640 Telge Rd., 77429]
When: Friday, January 14th from 7PM to 9PM
How much: Free!
Scoop’d from: The Twitterz – @NoLabelBrewCo

Our love affair with No Label Brewing Co. is obvious and unabashed. Tomorrow, Friday the 14th of January, they’re holding a tasting event at Rockwell Tavern and Grill. We had our beer correspondent at the very first No Label sale in Katy. Now it’s time for the rest of us to step up and get out. Try the Ridgeback Ale. It’s fantastic.

Daniel Johnston at Fitzgerald’s

Where: Heights [2706 White Oak Drive, 77007]
When: Friday, January 14th at 8PM
How much: $15 Today; $20 Day of Show (Tomorrow)
Scoop’d from: FitzLiveMusic.com

It won’t be soon that I forgive my friend for introducing me to the poisonous music of Daniel Johnston. I was living out of the country when he told me to check it out and I blindly bought the double album released in 2004. The original recordings did not do him justice. After checking out the documentary, “The Devil and Daniel Johnston,” I gained a greater appreciation for his music. Quite a story, that man has.

Paris Falls at Fitzgerald’s

Where: Heights [2706 White Oak Drive, 77007]
When: Saturday, January 15th at 8PM
How much: Free for 21+; $5 for 20-
Scoop’d from: IndieHouston.com

The album, Reverse Mirror Image, has been out for a month via Paper Weapons Records, but that’s not stopping Paris Falls from celebrating its release as they should. Buy the Reverse Mirror Image now on iTunes (or listen to it streaming on SoundCloud) and then make your way to the free show (if you’re over 21) on Saturday. Make sure to learn one or two of the songs verbatim so you can sing along. Bands love that. Paris falls will be accompanied by A.P. Dugas & The Religion as well as Young Girls, and DJ Psychedelic Sex Panther.
