The Look Ahead: Lucia, Radney, Major, Alicia, Urban Souls and Lady Spartans
Surely most of you have some grandiose plans for the weekend. With Valentine’s Day zeroing in, the time is now to start planning if you haven’t already. Take the little lady/man/ladyman to something nice this weekend. They will appreciate it. We’ll be back on Monday with a list of last-minute ideas. If we need to know about an upcoming event leave a comment, tweet at us (@TheLoopScoop) or email us at email@example.com.
Lucia di Lammermoor by Houston Grand Opera
Where: Brown Theater at Wortham Center [501 Texas Ave., 77002]
When: Friday, February 11th at 7:30PM
How much: From $46 to $239
Scoop’d from: Opera Buffs
“The volatile religious and political conflicts of two ancient Scottish clans fuel the drama of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor.” That’s pretty much the only selling point I need to hear. Familial conflict. Clan wars. Love story? Oh yeah, you better believe there’s a love story.
Lady Spartan Soccer! Stratford High School vs. Kingwood Park (Benefitting the Chris Matthews Memorial Fund)
Where: Stratford Athletic Complex [North 8th St. / North Main St.]
When: Friday, February 11th JV Game at 5:00 PM, Varsity Game at 7:00 PM
How much: $2, $3 and as much as you’re willing to give
Scoop’d from: The Stratford High School Booster Club
Nothing brings people together in troubled times quite like sports. In this case—the Lady Spartan Soccer Home District Opener in Stratford serves to not only gather donations in the wake of the tragic death of Chris Matthews, but also bring those in pain together in support of the team he lead.
Whispers from the Colored Section: A Celebration of Black History Told through Dance
February is Black History Month. Urban Souls Dance Company aims to celebrate via dance, as if there were any other way. “Whispers from the Colored Section” tells the story of The Gregory School, Houston’s first colored public school, and the blossoming of Freedman’s Town in the 1920s. Seems like a “can’t miss” to me.
Ryan Beaver (whom we saw at Blue Moose Lodge a while back) will be playing the opening set for Mr. Radney Foster at Dosey Doe this weekend. What kind of name is Radney, you ask? The BEST kind. Ahead of the release and tour for the newly reunited Foster and Lloyd album, catch Radney’s solo act tomorrow night.
Major Jackson and Alicia Ostriker Reading Followed by Interview

Scoop’d from: Sarah
