The Look Ahead: The Martin Luther King Jr. Special

We’re dissolving two of our favorite columns, Your Regular Scoop of Houston and Procrastinator’s Plan, and giving them a new look this year. Gone is the single serving of events in Houston. Here is a five-times-a-week battery of things to do. We will publish a few events every morning. If we’ve missed something let us know with an email to contact@theloopscoop.com or tweet at us @TheLoopScoop.

5th Annual MLK Youth Parade

Where: Downtown [Minute Maid Park - 501 Crawford St., 77002]
When: Saturday, January 15th starting at 12PM
How much: Free
Scoop’d from: DowntownHouston.org

If you’re downtown on Saturday and wondering what all the buzz is about, it’s probably due to the kiddos participating in the MLK Parade. This youth event is sponsored by The MLK Parade Foundation. If you’re working on Monday like I am, you might want to get in all the parade watching while you can on Saturday.

Dreamkeepers Children’s March

Where: OST / South Union Area [Griggs and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.]
When: Saturday, January 15th starting at 10AM
How much: Free!
Scoop’d from: Eventful.com

Just when you thought that one youth parade was enough, we’ve got a second option. This one happens to be right near my old stomping grounds at the University of Houston. The parade will fittingly travel a route down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Make sure to get out there to support all the young Dreamkeepers.

The 33rd Annual “Original” MLK Parade

Where: Downtown [Texas @ Jackson]
When: Monday, January 17th starting at 10AM
How much: Free!
Scoop’d from: DowntownHouston.org

Don’t miss the Dreamkeeper’s Ball on Friday, but the crown gem of the Black Heritage Society’s Martin Luther King celebration is the parade on Monday morning. There are 25 blocks of parade goodness to be had. Starting right across the street from Minute Maid Park, the parade will surely have a little bit of everything for all the Dreamers out there.

17th Annual MLK Grande Parade

Where: Downtown [Allen Parkway]
When: Monday, January 17th at 10AM
How much: Free!
Scoop’d from: DowntownHouston.org

Follow the MLK Grande Parade on twitter (@HoustonParade) if you can’t make it to the Monday event. Obviously, we think that an in-person appearance by you is way better than tracking them on social media. The course will start on Allen Parkway, head toward Bagby in Downtown, pull a u-turn and end up at Allen Parkway and Taft. There will be a concert to follow. Sounds good to me.
