The Procrastinator’s Plan 1.1.10

Just so you Loopsters know, a new year and countless resolutions have not been able to curb our penchant for procrastination. Even now, a few hours after my self imposed deadline for this post, I sit here dividing my attention between college bowl games and this week’s plan. So please don’t hold any grammatical errors against me.

Without further ado, the Procrastinator’s plan for the first weekend of 2010.

Ears still ringing?
The first Friday of the new year is here already and so is the Battle of the Bands at the Meridian. Go have a listen to some of the local areas best metal bands, as they vie for the chance to open up for Emmure on February 12th. It might not be your cup of tea, but let’s be honest, with your head still pounding from last night, the only thing that will get your mind off your hangover will be listening to music loud enough to make your ears bleed. Tickets are $10 dollars at the door.

Hair of the Dog
I can never get enough college football, unless I’m sitting at the Armed Forces Bowl, watching my beloved Cougars get demolished by Air Force. If you need a drink after a rough New Year’s Eve party or want to drown your sorrows after your team’s tough bowl loss, head over to Taps on Washington. They have a great selection of beers to help you through your rough time. It’s a great place to come as you are, watch a little football and have a good beer. The taste of defeat was never so sweet.

Football or Futbol?
As the bowl season winds down, I go into a panic as I realize that a huge part of my existence is gone. Football. This year, I’m going to try to fill the void with a new sport I’ve heard of, “futbol.” Hopefully, it works out for me. If you’re a seasoned hooligan or just looking for something to get you through this rough patch, check out the Interliga matches on Saturday at Roberston Stadium. It’s a doubleheader, so you’ll be sure to get your fill. The first match kicks off at 5:30PM with the second one following at 8:00PM. Get your boletos here and once you get to Robertson, look for something called a pitch(?!?).

Grow Some Stones
Inevitably, with the new year comes amazingly profound resolutions. Everybody and their mother resolves to eat better, live healthier and work out. For those of you who cant seem to find your way to the gym, why not try your hand at rock climbing? Stone Moves has some of the best indoor climbing in Southeast Texas and they can help you out no matter what your skill level is. Why go to a crowded gym filled with sweaty, ‘roid ragers who never wipe down the machines, when you can bust your moves (and not your head) on the rock walls at Stone Moves. They’ll be closed on the first to recover from their rockin’ new years, but they’ll open back up on Saturday.

Who Will Save Your Soul?
If you haven’t gotten enough live music during the first weekend of the new year, hit up the Sunday Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues. Praise the Lord in song to make up for your wickedness during the New Year’s eve party. As for food, they have a spread that includes southern brunch staples like cheese grits, fried chicken and country biscuits with gravy along with salmon risotto and chicken, shrimp and sausage penne. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the Strawberry Rhubarb cobbler. Tickets are $38 and you can purchase them or find out more information here.
