What’d We Miss: 8.1.11 Weekly Reader

Out with the old and in with the new. July was getting tiresome, wasn’t it. Good thing for us time keeps on tickin’ and August is already here. That being the case, let’s take one last look at July. Here are the articles you might have missed last week.

Postcards from Houston: First Class Schooled by Richard
We were invited to take part in the Postcards from Houston classes now in session at Texas Art Supply on Montrose Blvd. Naturally, we sent our most art-centric staffer to get the lowdown. So far he’s come away inspired and a little bit more knowledgeable about Houston’s design.

Staff Notes and Photos by Paul
Some of you might think it’s too hot to play outside these days. Well, Paul doesn’t share that opinion. He asked you to guess what park he took this photo at and nobody got it correct until…

Free Parking: Lawrence Park by Paul
…we started our new column about Houston parks (and other outdoor activities). First up is Lawrence Park, the beginning of the Heights bike trail, a covered basketball court and a lot of flexibility for any outdoor activity. If you can find this park tucked away in the Heights, you’ll be better off for it.

Street Art of the Week: Dawn Distortion
This is one of the prettiest photos we’ve had the pleasure of publishing in our Street Art of the Week column. The art is by Nzane, the photograph is from E.Caves. Make sure to check it out.

Houston Helps: The Center for Hearing and Speech
This was a difficult non-profit to cover because the Center for Hearing and Speech covers so much ground on their own. With a ton of ways to get involved, we’re not sure why you’re hesitating. Help out your community. It’s the right thing to do.

Where’s Pauldo (ep. 74)
This one took no time at all to be solved. You can take that up with one @PaulBTucker. He submitted this photo for your solving pleasure. From the looks of it, he has another for you next week — if you should choose to accept your mission.

Hubcap Grill and Beer Garden: How Does Your Burger Grow? by Paul
We promise (maybe) that this is the last article on Hubcap Grill that we’ll publish for a while. We’ve been hitting Ricky Craig up a little too much lately. So make sure that you read about the new Hubcap Grill and Beer Garden that opened last week in the Heights. We’ve talked a lot about it, but its finally here.

Photo of the Week: Here’s the Church, Here’s the Steeple
We must have been in a black and white mood last week. The Photo of the Week submitted by Shannon Reiswig is a terrific shot of the Annunciation Catholic Church’s steeple against the night sky.

Save the Date: The Inescapable WTF Moment by X
Our dating columnist seemed to have a good run for a while, but it all came crashing down last week. Not only that, it came crashing down in one of the weirdest ways possible. Offer your condolences.
